And While We're on the Subject...Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 - 11:34AMMystery Tree « Previous Main Next » ![]() I don't know what this is and my reference books aren't helping. The tree is in front of a house on my street. It has just begun to bloom with these pink flowers. The prominent pistils remind me of an hibiscus, and the fruits look a bit like magnolias. Anyway, it's pretty. UPDATE: A friend has helped identify this as Lagunaria Patersonii, the Norfolk Island Hibiscus, native to Norfolk Island, an Australian possession between New Zealond and New Caledonia. Dispite its name, it is not a true Hibiscus but a distant relative. It is also known as the Cow Itch Tree and the Primrose tree. I think you're right, it could be a hibiscus, at least the flower looks so like a hibiscus. Soft, pink, Beautifully caught too! :O)
