This is my San Francisco: a town full of color and whimsy and serendipity. Expect to see things the tourists don't come for and the locals take for granted. I always seem to take my favorite shots on the way to do something else.

Cable Car Cable Sheaves

These enormous pulleys, the diameter of a large table, are located beneath the Cable Car Barn on Russian Hill. They are called sheaves, and redirect the drive cables of the system from the big drive wheels in the barn to their respective slots under the streets of the city. They actually have spokes the size of a bedpost, but the low light exposure blurred out the detail.
